Hi Folks I am interested in learning more about degus as these little guys really make me smile. I have been a gerbil enthusiast for 18yrs, my last girlies passed away last year. Degus look to be chinXguinea picXgerbilly creatures and reading about them online they sound gerbilly in nature too (though more talkative like a guinea) Unfortunately I don't know anyone who has some so have no firsthand experience. Do you have a lot of them in? I have seen them in the pet shop at Aberdeen beach but am always wary of buying animals from pet shops.

Hya, degus are brilliant creatures, very interesting and amusing - not quite as tame as rats, but very active and friendly.
We have LOTS of them here if you would like to come and see them (various ages, all single sex groups). They do prefer to live in groups and snuggle up together at night ! They are easy enough to care for, as long as you know a bit about their feeding needs - we can discuss this more with you if you decide you want some.
Do give us a call if you would like to pop out and have a look - no committment of course. I dont know what the shops recommend as housing, but it MUST be a wire based cage - a chinchilla type cage or parrot cage (so long as the bars are close enough together - they WILL eat through a plastic base so a rat cage is no use at all.
