Yes! I know...I promised to post each month...and I can only apologise!
We try!...Perhaps if I give you an idea of an average day.....
Today...it is still the 10th of May and will probably be the 11th by the time I have posted this
Today started at the back of 7.00 with a phone call about 'domestic' ducklings, with one egg hatching late... we gave what advice we could.
As I have to work as a Taxi driver in the odd hours of the day and night to support us as a 'family' I got up first at 7.30 to pick up a client in Aberchirder and take them to the airport.
Having to drive through a blizzard of snow and hail is not what I would have expected!...
However, having left Pauline to let all the cats, chickens, ducks, geese etc out and hoping that Joyce, one of our volunteers was well enough ( which she wasn't ) to turn up and do her usual round of feeding the Rabbits, Guinnea Pigs, Gerbils, Degus etc
I delivered the customer safely to the airport as arranged.
I then had to wait an hour + till the next customer arrived at the airport to be delivered to Peterhead.
Meanwhile I had recieved a call from a member of the public about an inujred deer near Inverurie.
Knowing that I had at least the time to go and assess the siruation... I visited the site and found the deer in a very distressed state.
So distressed that I was not prepared to attempt to move it.
This was a case where the deer had to be 'put down'...as soon as possible!
Unfortnately...we, as an animal rescue centre...are not allowed to do this...
On contacting the 'wildlife crime' officer, I was informed that I had to contact the SSPCA, because the on duty vets would charge the police for 'putting down' the deer ...while the SSPCA would not charge them!
On this occassion I offer thanks to the SSPCA for their quick response!
Sadly ....the deer had already 'gone' when they arrived.
The previous night we had also recieved a warning about a 'Sand Martin' colony in Hatton.
It seems that there is a major colony of over 30 nests st the Hatton site.
Thanks to a local resident ....this is now being dealt with by the local 'wildlife crime officer' and we hope that this important colony can be saved!
Other than this...we have recieved our first Owl this year!
He / She, Is a young Tawney Owl and we will keep it in our care until we believe it is fit to go and release back into the wild.
