Our 3 year old male guinea pig Magnus lost his hutchmate on Hogmanay and is very lonely. We have 2 other male guinea pigs but I am nervous about introducing them to each other incase there are any fights. Does anyone have any advice about this they could give me? I have been told that if I introduce a neutered guinea pig, male or female, there will not be a problem. Is this true? If it is true does anyone know of a neutered guinea pig who is looking for a new home?

Hi Caz
Sorry Magnus lost his friend poor chap! You are right to be warey about introducing males, as adults they will probably fight and it can be pretty nasty.
Certainly a neutered girl would be a good friend for him, and there is unlikely to be any squabbling, but a male, neutered or not, at adult age will not get along usually.
We have found that either a male and female (with either neutered) works best, or ... if you wish to introduce another boy, it is best with a young one, Magnus would not see him as a threat as he would be too young to be sexually mature and they should bond up well. Obviously, you would need to watch them pretty closely to ensure there was no bullying, but we have found this works, more often than not. The obvious problem is that you do end up eventually with another guinea pig who has lost his (older) mate, and the cycle starts all over again.
We dont have any neutered piggies with us, and at the moment no young males which we could help with, but we will keep our ears open in case we hear of any for you.
Best wishes

Thank you so much for your advice. If a neutered female does pop up please do let me know. We have 5 other female guinea pigs so if Magnus should "leave us" she would still have plenty of friends to keep her company, rather than beginning the cycle all over again with a baby male guinea pig. Thank you again, Caz
